Pensacola Navy flight surgeon talks about growing up hungry in Haiti and how a turkey helped inspire him to become a doctor. Pensacola News Journal.
Dr. Mathurin’s Message of Hope for Children of his Native Haiti
With little money and limited education, Jean Mathurin came to the United States from the slums of Port au Prince, Haiti, in 1998 to work with his father in a tomato-packaging plant.
His prospects were as slim as his dreams were wide.
Twenty years later, Mathurin is a physician and lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. He is in the middle of an aerospace medicine residency at Naval Air Station Pensacola and hopes to become the chief medical officer on a U.S. aircraft carrier.
